Queen of Egypt during the 18th dynasty. She
was the daughter of Thothmes I, with whom she
ruled until the accession to the throne of
her husband and half-brother Thotmes II.
Throughout his reign real power lay with
Hatshepsut, and she continued to rule after
his death, as regent for her nephew Thotmes
III. Her reign was a peaceful and prosperous
time in a period when Egypt was developing
its armies and expanding its territories. The
ruins of her magnificent temple at Deir
el-Bahri survive.
